Copyright © 2002 | Aaron Traffas (BMI) Intro D G D G Verse D I hear the coyotes calling G A Their melancholy pierces the night D I feel those wheat fields waving G A Calling me with their collective spite G I know tomorrow morning D G Fate will dictate my part Em But I never believed in fate A Because I know the coyote’s heart Chorus D G You’re 200 miles away D On the other side of the state G And I’m going round and round in a wheat field A Trying to beat the rain D G The sun goes down; it won’t matter much Em We’ll keep on cutting ‘till the straw gets tough A I’ll be free when we get through D I'll head back to town and back to you Outside the chaff is blowing Inside my muscles ache Outside the sun is setting In it I see your face I’ll be damned if I leave Before the harvest moon assumes a crescent shape I’d hit the road with the hammer down If only I could these fetters break I see the storm clouds rolling Oklahoma's gift: the rain I see the weather, unlike you, Never minded the grain The squall line across the field moves Just like your life crossed mine As I roll the tarp I think I should have been done in time

Still my favorite song of yours since I first heard it at Busters but you’ve written some other outstanding stuff–especially liked What’s Wrong with Me at Mikes last night. Also enjoyed Levelland and Pancho and Lefty, two of my favorite songs. Hope to catch you again in December but hey, start a little earlier, please–this old guy fades fast. (By the way, did anyone say last night, “Uh, ya know any Toby Keith?”)
